Archived from groups: rec>pets>cats>anecdotes (more info?)

Hopitus does not live in FL anymore and has finally managed to
register w/something that allows me to post to
this ng after all this time. A close pal back in Sunshine State (no,
Matt, south FL, not where you are) has several
mixed-breed Persians she took in years ago. One of them, 'Odie', an
older male, developed renal failure because
she fed them all, over time, the poison food.
Some form of Iams. Aside: just by the Grace of God I've been feeding
all of my cats a Purina version which did
not fall under the poison food categories. Anyway, my friend has spent
big bucks (luckily, she was able to and
still is) giving Odie the vet treatment he's needed since the renal
failure developed and her vets (regular plus her
emergency vet) documented everything by fax to proper dept. of Iams,
laying the cause of Odie's medical problem
directly on his consumption of their poison food. My friend has had to
sign NOTHING for those who were speculating on that possibility (just
because I could not post doesn't mean I haven't been reading rpca) -
she is
communicating w/Iams totally by phone....the key here is the vets'
paperwork to Iams.
She has received a check from Iams for not quite a thousand dollars -
her vet expenses for Odie's renal failure
treatment - so far. She inquired of Iams if they would follow through
paying for Odie's vet bills till he eventually
goes to the Rainbow Bridge.....they promised to 'get back to
her'....and soon did. She was informed that Odie's
medical care will be totally reimbursed to her for the remainder of
his life. Recently she got another check for
$300 some-odd vet bill payment from them as Odie has crises now and
then but he's a tough old kitty and is
very skinny but still eating and drinking good.....my pal has to
'hydrate' him subcutaneously on a regular basis.
The reason I posted all this is that if *any* of you has vet expenses
for your cat(s) resulting from that poisoned
food, verified by your vet, this is a heads-up.Iams, at least, is
taking responsibility.
Also, my friend informed me that their is a large "class-action"
lawsuit being put together in New York State
to be filed (maybe filed already) against that middleman outfit
between China and the USA pet food companies.
She will automatically be included in it thanks to Iams.

Matthew-if Iams has included her in the class action suit, and Iams is
also
the company from whom she has received payment, what would be
the problem? Sounds like this lady and her vet are pretty savvy, to
have already managed to collect such a substantial amount from
Iams. Good for her, and good for her vet for sticking up for her.

Yay for her. And yay for her vet for stepping up to the plate and
helping her.
I think it's admirable that Iams is taking responsibility; instead of
a
one-lump-sum payment they are going to CONTINUE to take care of
Odie the rest of his life.
I still won't buy
their food. It's Purina products here from now on.
Thanks for letting us know. There are lots of lurkers here. I hope
this
post helps someone out there. These poor poisoned pets deserve
no less.

Oh, no, I didn't think that. I'm just (blissfully) ignorant re: all
matters legal. It must
be difficult to not be able to *know* whether or not Spirit will
continue to show
no ill effects or not in the future. Hope she stays healthy.

She may have to check on this. She has accepted a form of payment. I am
going to be part of that lawsuit.

Ps I hope her furball is doing better. I am so scared that Spirit will end
up with problems. He ate on a little but I mean less than a spoonful. One
of the most scariest times of my life.

Oh I am not knocking anyone please don't think that. I have been in touch
with the lawyers that are doing the class action thru my lawyers. They
advised not to take any money for it would be can be considered a payment or
compensation option which can interfere with receiving a judgment in the
future. I got offered vet bills for spirit also but at this time declined
them due to the pending lawsuit. The check is still at the lawyers and has

I just to make the A@@holes pay and are brought to justice that caused this

He he Spirit is a boy ;-). I pray everyday that he stays healthy. The vet
gives him a clean bill for now but in his words time will tell. We were
lucky that he had less than a spoonful on the day in question and that I had
him at the vets first thing in the morning and got him care. I know I
should have had him at the emergency vet that night but the only emergency
vet around here within 100 miles has more problems than the US government.
My vet since the food recall has open a 24 hour vet center in Orlando to
compensate the problems of non being around.

I didn't think anything bad of you. I just wanted to make sure no one
thought bad of me.

Ps I have 2 females They are limo and Ka'shay. Ka'shay and the others
also like the catnip pad from ABC. The only thing about ABC is do small
orders they have a bad tendency to ship large orders in multiple parts and
the shipping gets stupidly high.

LOL - born & raised in Miami...the 'canes through all the years seemed
to confine themselves to that local area, including the "Conchs" way
down in Key West.
Now, however, they seem to be roaring through the entire state of FL,
many coming up through the Gulf of Mexico to even threaten panhandle
area of the state.
I - as a native "Florida Cracker" (and these are rare indeed) -
consider this very wierd and attribute it to the global warming thing.
The residents of north FL are not used to dealing with 'canes, but I
notice they seem to be learning quickly.....I also hope the building
codes are being revised these days to 'batten down the hatches
(dwelling roofs) up there. South FL residents know that if your roof
goes during a 'cane, you and yours are totally at the mercy of Mother
Nature at her worst. When I was about 24, our porch roof (all 15 pet
cats were out there at the time) was blasted off by some big one named
Celia or Cecile w/

225 mph winds and we quickly herded all cats into the main house.
These cats did NOT all get along, but they *knew* the 'cane was raging
outside and were quiet;'
for some reason they all came to my bed and slept there for the rest
of the night. I knew immediately when the 'cane was gone - did you
ever experience 15 cats
fighting on your bed while you were in it with them? ROFL.

I was down there when many of them have hit. Doing rescue work try to
evacuate the shelters in time. We got most out but the live stock were
panicked and it was hard to get them moved sometimes.

I live near Orlando we got hit major in 2004 it was like a big x over our
area. 4 of them right in a row.

I know how it is with animals during the storm. During one of the major
hurricanes the shelters and rescue centers that we were trying to move.
When the hurricane winds hit the roof was taken off luckily a local hotel
let us use some rooms and the conference center. Ever heard 200 cats plus
dogs at one time scared not a memory I think of if I have to. Worse was
when we had to move them in the storm. I am a big guy I was getting lifted
off the ground some times but we got the moved. One time I wished I still
worm old fashioned long johns with button up rear it would have made clean
up a lot easier ;-)

Storms hit here they all come running to daddy. I can't move due to they
will bite if I try to make them get odd their safe area.
